Most people asking what a driveway costs are really asking one question: why won't anyone give me a number? The honest answer is that the concrete itself is the cheapest, most predictable part of the job. What moves the price is everything that happens before the truck shows up.
A driveway is priced by the square foot only in the sense that a house is priced by the square foot. It gets you in the neighbourhood and it tells you almost nothing about the specific job in front of you. Two driveways of identical size on the same street can differ by thousands, and none of that difference is in the concrete.
Here is what actually drives it.
What has to come out first
On a new build, the approach is bare dirt. Nothing has to be removed, and the crew starts on grading. That is the cheap version, and it is not the version most homeowners are buying.
A replacement means demolition first. Old concrete has to be broken out, loaded and hauled, and disposal is charged by weight. A four-inch residential slab is heavy; a six-inch slab with old wire mesh through it is heavier and slower, because the mesh holds the broken pieces together and every piece has to be cut free rather than lifted. If the old drive was poured over an even older one — which happens more than people expect — there are two slabs to remove and the disposal doubles.
- Bare dirt on a new build is the least expensive starting point there is.
- Breaking out and hauling an existing slab is a real line item, not a rounding error.
- Reinforced or doubled-up old concrete costs more to remove than plain old concrete.
Whether a truck can actually reach it
This is the factor most people never think about and it can be the largest single swing in the whole quote.
A concrete truck is a large, heavy, wide vehicle. If it can back up to the forms and discharge straight into place, the pour is fast and the crew size is small. If it cannot, the concrete still has to get there — by pump, by buggy, or by wheelbarrow — and every one of those options costs more in equipment, labour, or both. A pump truck is a separate machine with a separate operator and a minimum charge that applies whether you use ten yards or thirty.
Backyard patios are the obvious case, but plenty of driveways have the same problem: a narrow side gate, a steep approach, a septic field the truck cannot cross, overhead power lines, or a mature tree that makes the turn impossible. None of that is visible on a map, which is a large part of why a real quote needs someone standing on the property.
Base preparation, which is most of the actual work
Concrete does not hold itself up. It spreads load across whatever it is sitting on, and if that material moves, the slab moves with it. Almost every failed driveway you have ever seen failed from underneath.
Proper preparation means excavating to a consistent depth, removing soft or organic material, bringing in and compacting base rock where the native soil will not do the job, and setting the grade so water runs somewhere sensible. On a site with good, stable native soil, this goes quickly. On a site with expansive clay, an old fill area, a buried stump, or a spring that only appears in February, it does not.
This is also where the difference between a cheap bid and a fair one usually lives. Two contractors quoting the same driveway can be a long way apart on price simply because one has priced real base work and the other has priced pouring concrete onto whatever is already there. The slab will look identical for about two years.
Almost every failed driveway failed from underneath. The part you can see is rarely the part that went wrong.
Thickness and reinforcement, matched to the load
A residential driveway carrying passenger vehicles and the occasional delivery truck is typically poured at four inches. Where heavier vehicles turn, park or repeatedly track — the apron at the street, an RV parking area, a shop approach — that gets thickened, because turning loads are far harder on a slab than straight-line driving.
Reinforcement follows the same logic. Rebar on a grid tied and supported so it sits in the middle of the slab does real structural work. Reinforcement lying on the ground at the bottom of the pour does close to nothing, because it is not where the tension is. That difference costs almost nothing in material and a meaningful amount in labour, which is exactly why it is a common place to cut a corner.
More is not automatically better
Paying for six inches across an entire residential driveway usually buys less than spending the same money on better base preparation. Thickness helps a slab bridge a soft spot; it does not stop the soft spot from settling. If the budget is finite — and it always is — the ground under the concrete is the better place to spend it.
Finish, layout and joints
A plain broom-finished rectangle is the fastest thing a crew can build. A driveway with a banded border, a colour, a stamped section, or panels laid out to a specific module takes longer, needs more hands on site at the same time, and has to be finished inside a working window that does not wait for anyone.
Control joints matter here too, and they are not decoration. Concrete shrinks as it cures and it is going to crack somewhere; cutting deliberate lines of weakness means it cracks under a straight line you cannot see instead of wandering across the surface. Where those joints fall is a layout decision, and on a driveway with any complexity it takes thought rather than a tape measure.
What to ask when you get a quote
- What thickness, and where does it change? A quote that says four inches everywhere on a drive with an RV pad is not describing the same job as one that thickens it.
- What is the base preparation, specifically? Depth of excavation, whether base rock is being imported, and whether it is being compacted.
- Is demolition and disposal included, and is it priced by weight or as a flat figure?
- How is the reinforcement supported? “Rebar included” and “rebar tied and chaired at mid-slab” are different jobs.
- Where will the joints fall, and where does water go once the surface is no longer dirt?
A contractor who can answer those without hedging has actually looked at your property. One who cannot is quoting a rectangle.

Common questions
Why won't a contractor quote a driveway over the phone?
Because the two things that move the price most — what the base under it looks like and how much equipment can physically reach the pour — cannot be seen over a phone. A number given without that is a guess that gets revised later, which is worse than no number at all.
Is a thicker driveway always better?
