How Long Before You Can Drive on New Concrete?

Walk on it, park on it, and put a loaded truck on it are three different answers. Here's the honest timeline, and why the first week matters more than people expect.

Walk on it, park on it, and put something heavy on it are three different questions with three different answers. The short version: a day or so for foot traffic, about a week for a car, and longer than you would think before a loaded truck.

The longer version is worth reading, because the first week does more for the next thirty years than anything else that happens to a slab.

The rough timeline

  1. First 24 hours — stay off it

    The surface is hardening but has almost no strength. Footprints, paw prints, a dropped tool, and anything scraped across it will be permanent. This is also the window where curing matters most.

  2. 24 to 48 hours — foot traffic, carefully

    Usually walkable, depending on temperature and the mix. Walk, don't drag. Keep furniture, ladders and bikes off it, and keep pets off it — claws mark concrete far more easily than people expect at this stage.

  3. About 7 days — passenger vehicles

    A slab typically reaches a large share of its strength in the first week, and for a normal residential driveway that is generally enough for cars and light trucks. Park normally; avoid turning the wheel while stationary, which grinds a point load into one spot.

  4. 28 days and beyond — full load

    Heavy vehicles, RVs parked long-term, dumpsters, equipment. Concrete keeps gaining strength well past a month, but 28 days is the conventional point at which it is treated as having reached its design strength.

The thing nearly everyone gets backwards

Concrete does not harden by drying out. It hardens through hydration — a chemical reaction between cement and water that needs water present to keep going. A slab that loses its moisture early does not cure faster. It stops curing.

Drying and curing are not the same thing. A slab that dries out early hasn't finished early — it has stopped early, at whatever strength it had reached.

That reaction continues for a long time. Most of the strength arrives in the first weeks, but concrete keeps gaining for months and, in a slow quiet way, for years. What you cannot do is get back the strength lost in the first few days by watering it later. That window closes.

What curing actually looks like on site

Keeping moisture in, by whatever method suits the job — a curing compound sprayed on the fresh surface, plastic sheeting, damp coverings, or wetting the slab down on a schedule. Which method is used matters much less than whether it is done at all and started early enough.

This is invisible work. It is also the difference between a surface that holds up and one that dusts, scales and crazes in a few years, which is why it gets special attention on a Redding summer pour.

Why everyone quotes 28 days

Because that is the standard test age. Concrete strength is specified and verified by crushing sample cylinders at 28 days, so the number is everywhere in specifications, and it has leaked into general conversation as though it were the moment concrete becomes usable.

It is not. It is a benchmark for comparing mixes on equal terms. Your driveway does not become safe at midnight on day 28 — it has been carrying your car for three weeks by then.

What actually damages new concrete

  • Turning the wheels while stopped. Concentrates a huge twisting load into one small patch. Hard on any slab, worst on a new one.
  • Point loads. Trailer jacks, jack stands, scaffold feet and RV levelling blocks put a lot of weight through a small area. Spread them with a pad.
  • De-icing salts in the first winter. Genuinely damaging to concrete that has not had a full season to mature. Relevant at higher elevations along the I-5 corridor rather than in Redding itself.
  • Heavy delivery vehicles. A concrete truck, a moving truck or a dumpster on a young slab is a different load class from a pickup. Worth actively routing around it.
  • Letting the edges get undermined. Water running off the slab edge and washing base material out is slow, silent and eventually expensive.

Colour, sealer and the first year

Fresh concrete looks blotchy while it dries out unevenly, and it will keep changing tone for weeks. Dark patches that look like stains are very often just moisture leaving at different rates, and they even out. Judging the final colour in week one is a reliable way to worry about nothing.

On decorative or stamped work, sealing timing depends on the product and the curing method, and sealing too early can trap moisture and cloud the finish. It is worth asking specifically when — and how often it will need redoing — rather than assuming it is a one-time job.

The short answer, if you skipped down

  • Stay off it entirely for the first day.
  • Walk on it after a day or two, gently.
  • Park a normal vehicle around a week.
  • Anything genuinely heavy, wait the month.
  • And whatever the schedule, let it be cured properly — that is the part that decides how it looks in ten years.
