Sizing and Reinforcing an RV Pad

An RV pad carries sustained weight in a few small footprints, season after season, without moving. That's a different problem from a driveway that gets driven over.

A driveway carries weight that keeps moving. An RV pad carries weight that sits — in a handful of small footprints, in the same spots, season after season. That is a different problem, and it is why an RV parked on a standard driveway slab eventually leaves a record of itself.

Sustained point loads are the whole issue

A loaded coach is heavy, but weight alone is not what makes this hard. Vehicles heavier than an RV drive across concrete every day without marking it, because the load is spread across moving axles and never stays anywhere.

Park an RV and the load stops moving. It concentrates into jack pads and tyre contact patches — a few small areas carrying thousands of pounds each, continuously, for months at a time. Concrete handles that better than most materials, but the soil underneath is the part that gets tired, and slow consolidation under a fixed load is exactly how a slab ends up dished under the jacks.

It is not the weight. It is the weight not moving.

Thickness and reinforcement

An RV pad is normally poured thicker than the surrounding residential driveway, and reinforced more deliberately. How much thicker depends on the rig, the soil and how it is used — a pad for a travel trailer parked seasonally is not the same as one carrying a large diesel pusher year round.

Two things matter as much as the number:

  • Where the reinforcement sits. Rebar tied on a grid and supported on chairs so it stays near mid-slab does structural work. Reinforcement lying on the ground when the concrete arrives does almost nothing, because it is not where the tension is. On a slab specifically built for concentrated loads, that distinction is the whole point of including it.
  • What is under it. A thicker slab spans a soft spot better; it does not stop the soft spot from consolidating. Compacted base under a pad that will hold a fixed load for years is not a place to save money.

Sizing it for how you actually live with it

This is where most regret comes from, and it costs nothing to get right at the planning stage.

A pad sized to the exact footprint of the coach technically works. It is also almost universally regretted, because nearly everything you do around an RV happens off its edges — the awning side, the steps, the storage bay doors, the hookups, walking around the back to check something.

Worth allowing for

  • The awning side. This is the side you will actually use. Chairs, a mat, a table — all of it wants to be on concrete rather than dirt or gravel.
  • The door side and the step down. Stepping off into mud is the thing people complain about first.
  • Bay doors. Storage compartments swing out low. You want to be standing on something solid when you unload.
  • Slide-outs. They need clearance, and it is easy to forget how far they travel when the rig is closed up in the driveway.
  • Length beyond the coach. A tow vehicle, or just room to walk around the back.
  • The approach. Backing an RV needs a longer, straighter, wider path than parking a car. A perfect pad you cannot get into comfortably is not a good pad.

Drainage, surface and the details that show up later

A pad that holds standing water under a parked rig will keep the underside damp and the surface stained. It needs deliberate slope like any other flatwork, and it needs it away from any structure.

A broom finish is the sensible surface here. It grips when wet, it does not need sealing, and it takes the traffic and the dropped equipment that happens around a rig without complaint. A stamped RV pad is possible and it is money spent where it does the least good — this is a working surface, and decorative finishes belong where people sit.

Things worth building in now

  • A conduit under the slab if power or water might ever run to the pad. Trivial before the pour, disruptive after.
  • Where the sewer connection lands, if there is one. Grade it in rather than working around it later.
  • Joint layout. Control joints should fall where the slab wants to crack, not where the jacks are going to sit.

Living with a new pad

Concrete keeps gaining strength for a long time, and a pad intended for sustained heavy load should get the full curing period before it takes one. Parking a loaded coach on a slab that is a week old is asking a young slab to do the hardest thing it will ever be asked to do — the timeline is worth respecting.

After that, one habit makes a real difference: put a pad under the jacks. A jack foot is a small steel plate carrying an enormous share of the coach's weight, and spreading that over a larger area with a proper block or pad is the cheapest insurance available for a slab you have just paid for.

Common questions

How big should an RV pad be?

Size it to the rig plus the way you actually use it — room to open the awning side, put the steps down, and walk around the back without stepping into dirt. A pad sized to the exact footprint of the coach technically works and is almost always regretted, because everything you do around an RV happens off its edges.
