Pouring Concrete in Redding Heat

Above about 90 degrees concrete stops behaving the way the textbook says. Here is what actually changes on a Redding summer pour, and why the start time matters.

Redding summers run hot and dry for months. Concrete does not care that this is normal here — above about 90 degrees it starts behaving differently, and a pour that would be routine in April becomes a job with a clock on it.

None of this makes summer concrete a bad idea. Flatwork gets poured through Northern California summers every year and it comes out fine. But it comes out fine because the schedule respects the heat, not because the heat stopped mattering.

What actually changes when it gets hot

Two things happen at once, and they work against each other.

First, the chemical reaction that hardens concrete speeds up. Warm concrete sets faster, which means the window between “too wet to finish” and “too stiff to finish” gets shorter. On a mild day that window is comfortable. At 105 degrees with a breeze, it can close on a crew that is one person short.

Second, water leaves the surface faster than it can rise from below. Fresh concrete bleeds water upward as the solids settle. In dry heat with any wind, that surface moisture evaporates faster than the bleed can replace it, and the top of the slab starts drying while the concrete underneath is still plastic. That mismatch is what causes plastic shrinkage cracking — the short, random surface cracks that show up within hours of a pour, before the concrete has meaningfully hardened at all.

The mistake that costs the most

When concrete stiffens faster than a crew can place it, the obvious fix is to add water at the truck. It is also the single most damaging thing that can be done to a slab.

Concrete strength is governed largely by the ratio of water to cement. Adding water on site to buy working time raises that ratio permanently. The concrete becomes easier to place and weaker forever — lower compressive strength, more shrinkage, a more porous surface that scales and dusts sooner. It does not recover. You cannot cure your way out of it.

Adding water at the truck buys twenty minutes of easier work and takes it out of the slab for the next thirty years.

The legitimate answers are to adjust the mix before it leaves the plant, to pour when it is cooler, and to have enough hands on site that the concrete never gets ahead of the crew. All three are scheduling and planning decisions, which is the real point: hot-weather concrete is managed before the truck arrives, not during.

How a summer pour actually runs

  1. Start early

    First light, not mid-morning. The goal is to have the concrete placed and finished before the day's peak, which in a Redding July means the work is largely done by the time most people are thinking about lunch. On the hottest stretches, some work moves to evening pours instead.

  2. Dampen everything the concrete will touch

    Subgrade, base rock and forms all get wetted down ahead of the pour — damp, not puddled. Dry base rock under a slab in August will pull water straight out of the bottom of the concrete, which starves the mix from below while the sun works on it from above.

  3. Size the crew to the weather, not the slab

    The same pour that two people can handle comfortably in spring may need three or four in high summer, purely because the finishing window is shorter. Being short-handed on a hot pour is how surfaces get finished late, and late finishing shows permanently.

  4. Cure immediately, not tomorrow

    Curing starts as soon as the surface can take it. Concrete does not harden by drying out — it hardens through a reaction that needs moisture to keep going. Letting a fresh slab dry in the sun stops that reaction near the surface and leaves the top weaker than the concrete an inch below it.

Why curing gets skipped, and what it costs

Curing is invisible work. Nobody drives past and admires it. A slab that was cured properly and one that was left to dry look identical the week it is poured, and different in five years — the uncured one dusts, scales, and shows surface crazing that the cured one does not.

In dry Redding heat this is the step that separates a slab that ages well from one that looks tired early, and it is entirely a matter of whether somebody bothered.

What this means if you're scheduling work

  • A summer start time that sounds inconveniently early is a good sign, not an imposition. Crews starting a July pour at 10am are making a choice about your slab.
  • Expect the schedule to move with the weather. A crew that will reschedule around an unusually brutal week is protecting the finished work.
  • Ask how the slab will be cured and for how long. A specific answer is a good sign; “it'll be fine” is not.
  • Do not read fine surface cracking in the first day as normal settling. Plastic shrinkage cracking is a heat-management symptom and it is worth asking about.

The other end of the year

For completeness: cold has its own rules, and Redding's winters are mild enough that it is rarely the binding constraint at valley elevations. Higher up the I-5 corridor — around Mount Shasta and Weed — it genuinely is, and a pour scheduled up there in late autumn is a different conversation about protecting concrete from freezing before it has gained enough strength to survive it.

Either way the principle is the same. Concrete is not a material you fight the weather with. It is one you schedule around it.

Should I put off my concrete project until autumn?

Not necessarily. Summer pours are routine in Redding — they just have to be planned around the heat rather than through it, which usually means an early start, wet-down base preparation and having enough hands on site to finish before the surface gets ahead of the crew. What matters is that the schedule respects the temperature, not the month on the calendar.

Does hot weather make concrete weaker?

It can, if water is added on site to make stiffening concrete easier to place. That extra water raises the water-to-cement ratio and permanently lowers the finished strength. Managing heat properly means adjusting timing, dampening the subgrade and curing straight away — not thinning the mix at the truck.
